my mantle

image

here are the final photos from the photoshoot i did with my mantle.  my mantle is a local band from the portland metro area, desiring to know the Lord more and be used by Him through the gift He has given them. i remember the first show of theirs that i went to. i was so stinkin impressed by their musical ability, and just how apparent it was that they had something that was other worldy :) since then, i have been so stinkin blessed to get to know them as brothers. they are much more than cool looking dudes in a band. their freakin ginormous hearts for the people around them, is something ive been able to experience and be apart of. i am so grateful for them and so stoked for what is coming next. its going to be something big, something they cant even imagine. something full of Him. seriously check my mantle out. you wont be disappointed in the slightest. you will be pointed to the one thing that wants you most, the one thing that knows you better, and the one thing that did everything he could to be with you.

and he came to nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

and there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet esaias. and when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

and he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. and the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

and he began to say unto them, this day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

XL Years

image

“to love at all is to be vulnerable. love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. if you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. but in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. it will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. to love is to be vulnerable.”

clive staples lewis the four loves

on this lovely day, march 31st, forty years ago, my parents began a journey that has brought them to this gift of IV decades of marriage. it has held seasons of good times and bad, sickness and health, richness and poorness. though through it all it has been marked with a deep deep love that has carried them through life’s unpredictability. i am forever grateful they chose vulnerability—and that they chose love.

cheers to my dear parents. here’s to many more years of love.

one of the deepest and strangest of all human moods is the mood which will suddenly strike us perhaps in a garden at night, or deep in sloping meadows, the feeling that every flower and leaf has just uttered something stupendously direct and important, and that we have by a prodigy of imbecility not heard or understood it. there is a certain poetic value, and that a genuine one, in this sense of having missed the full meaning of things. there is beauty, not only in wisdom, but in this dazed and dramatic ignorance. gk chesterton ・ 15 december 1900

chalk it up to creativity

the original quote: chalk it up to experience, at first sounds negative. it implies missing the mark. yet it holds such value in that something was grown in that moment of supposed failure. reflecting on past experience, some of the most significant lessons learned in my life were from failing. there is much beauty in attempting, in striving, and learning and growing from falling down, only to get back up and aspire again. creating & design are like this too. you work, study & toil to grow a depth of knowledge and expertise—sometimes you miss the mark. sometimes you soar right past to a place you couldn’t imagine.

in a world over saturated with media & design, at times it can be hard to riffle through it all to determine what really inspires and speaks deeply to me—what spurs me onto create. oftentimes the creative process is one that is more about the journey than the end work. in this journey i find much is grown and learned.

recently i have been drawn to dana tanamachi’s exquisite work. if you haven’t heard of this brooklyn gem, you should marvel at her design—she takes typography to a whole new level. the best part is that she does this all by hand.

with an itch to create, i studied and admired dana’s work and created a simple reminder to adorn a wall of my home—with it came a cultivation of my creativity. i hope you enjoy.
